IMMORTAL: THE FOREVER WAR

"Remember: you die only once, forever. No afterlife. You're powerful and you can live a long time, but you only live once... Don't fuck up."

- Brandi, Nuwisha Mentor to Tomas of Agrinnon, 1968 C.E.

There can be only one.

Since before time the battle between Light and Darkness has raged. In the age of stone, the giant ones stood supreme. Dark was their shadow; Death was the only child. The forces of Light were few and poor of might. Mother and Father combined their essences and man was born, but the giant still ruled. The Shining One shaped the warriors from the flesh of man to fight until the giant died. Once dead, the corrupting forces of the giant and his maker, the Dark One, twisted the quickened, some who turned to the dark path and others all walked the light. The Shining One was angered by this and his rage cried out...

"THERE SHALL BE ONLY ONE TO WIN THE PRIZE, ONE TO RULE, FROM THIS DAY FORWARD, ALL THE SONS SHALL BE TURNED TO EACH OTHER TO BATTLE. ONLY THE GREATEST, THE TRUE WARRIOR SHALL WIN, THERE CAN BE DARKNESS OR LIGHT FOR MAN. THAT IS THE PRIZE. BATTLE ON UNTIL ONLY ONE IS LEFT, FOR THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE"

And with that he dispersed them through the ages. They must fight until the end. Perfect warriors by birth, Light or Dark by nature. One is born each generation. The Father sends his blessings and curses, the mother hers, to prepare their Champion for Competition.

The Quickening

Origins of the Immortals

Immortals are the creations of the Shining One and the Dark One-cosmic entities locked in an eternal struggle. The Shining One, a being of light and balance, forged Immortals to protect humanity. The Dark One, a corrupter, sought to twist them into agents of chaos. Their conflict plays out across centuries, with Immortals as pawns. Mortals perceive them as myths, demons, or angels, depending on their actions. Their battles, often concealed, have shaped history and legends.

The Prize

The true nature of the Prize is shrouded in mystery. It could be ultimate power, enlightenment, or the destruction of the supernatural world's balance. Some believe it's the key to unifying Light and Darkness, while others fear it's a weapon that could doom humanity.

Interactions with Other Supernaturals

Immortals share an uneasy coexistence with Vampires, Werewolves, and Mages. The Technocracy seeks to study their regenerative properties, while Kindred fear their ability to disrupt the Masquerade. Werewolves often see them as intruders, and Mages view their Quickening as a unique magical anomaly.

Power of the Quickening

The Quickening represents the lifeblood and power source of an Immortal. It fuels their abilities, enhances their combat prowess, and symbolizes the essence of their victories and defeats. A metaphysical force, the Quickening is both a gift and a curse-tying Immortals to an endless cycle of conflict and evolution.

  • Gain: Quickening points are earned primarily by defeating other Immortals, absorbing their essence, and thereby growing in power. Secondary sources include rare rituals, ancient artifacts tied to the Shining One or Dark One, or special moments of intense personal Growth
  • Use: Immortals can expend Quickening points to activate or enhance their unique powers, heal wounds, or temporarily boost physical or mental Attributes. Quickening can also fuel devastating attacks or acts of extraordinary supernatural prowess.
  • Regenerate: Quickening points naturally regenerate over time through rest and meditation, particularly on hallowed or symbolic ground. Combat or high-stakes situations can also accelerate regeneration. Certain artifacts or alliances may further boost recovery rates.
  • The Essence Transfer: When an Immortal is defeated in battle, their Quickening is released in a dramatic display of energy-a storm of lightning and fire that destroys nearby electronics and sends ripples through the supernatural world. The victor absorbs this energy, gaining all remaining Quickening points of the fallen Immortal, as well as potential knowledge and memories.

Dueling Rules

Dueling is a sacred and binding aspect of Immortal existence, dictated by unspoken but universally adhered-to rules passed down through the ages. These guidelines ensure the integrity of the eternal competition for the Prize while respecting certain inviolable traditions:
  • One-on-One Only: Immortals are forbidden from engaging in group battles. Duels must be strictly one-on-one to ensure fairness and to honor the skill and essence of each combatant. Interference by other Immortals or mortals during a duel is considered a grave violation, often punished by the combined efforts of the community.
  • No Fighting on Hallowed Ground: Duels are prohibited on hallowed ground, which includes churches, temples, and other consecrated or spiritually significant locations. This rule is believed to have been established by the Shining One to provide sanctuaries where Immortals can find respite and reflect without fear of ambush. Breaking this rule is said to invoke supernatural consequences, often fatal
  • Formal Challenges:Before a duel begins, the challenging Immortal must issue a formal declaration. This ritualized moment often includes an exchange of names and acknowledgment of the stakes involved. It serves as both a warning and an agreement to abide by the rules.
  • Fight Until Death: Duels between Immortals are fought to the death. The defeated Immortal's Quickening is released in a dramatic and often destructive display, transferring their power and essence to the victor. To retreat or surrender is considered dishonorable and may lead to ostracization.
  • Respect for the Fallen:Once a duel is concluded, the victor is expected to honor the fallen by ensuring their remains are treated with dignity, preventing mortals from discovering their true nature.
These rules are not merely tradition; they are deeply ingrained in the culture of Immortals, shaping their interactions and conflicts across the ages.

Quickening Powers

The origins of Quickening Powers remain a mystery. Are they gifts of divine origin, a natural evolution of the eternal struggle, or a curse designed to perpetuate the conflict between Light and Darkness? Whatever their origin, these abilities define an Immortal’s path through eternity, shaping their destiny and their role in the forever war. Like other traits, Quickening Powers are developed through mastery, with each level unlocking new and more potent abilities. The progression from basic to advanced powers reflects an Immortal's growing connection to their Quickening. At their peak, these abilities rival the gods themselves, cementing the Immortal's place in the eternal tapestry of fate.

Regeneration

Immortals possess unparalleled recuperative abilities, allowing them to recover from injuries that would be fatal to mortals. Their healing factor is tied to their Quickening, and their ability improves with mastery. At its height, an Immortal’s body can mend wounds almost instantaneously, making them incredibly difficult to kill without decapitation.
Minor Recovery - The Immortal's body heals small wounds such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises within moments. Even life-threatening injuries are resolved quickly, though extreme damage requires additional effort. System: Spend 3 Quickening points to heal all lethal damage within a single scene. The Immortal also gains the ability to regenerate missing body parts, such as fingers or eyes, over the course of a few days.

This mastery of regeneration makes them formidable opponents, feared by allies and enemies alike. System: Spend 5 Quickening points to fully restore the body to its peak condition within seconds, regardless of the severity of the injuries. This includes recovering from mortal wounds (e.g., impalement or exposure to extreme environments). The Immortal can regrow entire limbs within a scene.
